With a new school year starting and the seasons hinting at a change, life can get busier. When life gets busy, tasks become our focus. Parents prepare lunches and drop kids off at school. Older students rush out the door for class. Adults notice the increase in traffic.
With a busier life, our spiritual focus can take a backseat. It is easy to convince ourselves that studying our Bibles or taking time to pray can wait. I don’t know about you, but I have said to myself, “I’ll get to it later.”
Later rarely comes. Yet, it is exactly when life is busier that we need greater spiritual focus. Traffic can be one of the greatest tests of our faith. The temptation to bless other drivers from inside our cars can be overwhelming.
In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus said, “You are the light of the world” (Matthew 5.14). When life frustrates or stresses us out, letting our light shine can be a challenge. But, that’s exactly when we need to let our light shine.
How can we do it? Take the time to pray. Find a short devotion. Download an app like Sacred Space, Book of Common Prayer, 3-Minute Retreat, or d365. Each one is free. Each one takes a few minutes and mixes guided prayer, scripture, and thoughts. Finding our spiritual focus is not difficult. It is a matter of self-discipline. With some spiritual self-discipline, we can maintain our spiritual focus. Then, letting our light shine will be natural.
