Finding Grace While Waiting

Reading Time: 2 minutes

A few years ago, I wrote a blog post about waiting. Today, we are waiting to hear who will win the U.S. Presidential election. At this point, the race is close and we do not know the outcome. There will be an outcome, but not yet.

Is there a source for grace while we wait?

Perspective

At some point, this moment will be a distant memory. Taking a long view isn’t a license for complacency. The long view can help us have some perspective. Improving the world does not end with an election. Regardless of the outcome, human rights and the environment will still demand people’s attention. We will continue to have work to do. For now, we can wait with the knowledge that this election is smaller than it feels while we are in it.

They are from the world; therefore what they say is from the world, and the world listens to them.

1 John 4.5

Finding God’s Voice

To whom do we listen while we are waiting? Some speak from their experience or for their own benefit. Some people intentionally deceive others. Some speak but don’t know what they are saying. If we listen to the voices of the world, we hear news of the world. If we search for God’s voice, we will find it and hear wisdom from above. Divine wisdom can be a source of grace while we wait.

Patience

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God—what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Romans 12.2

Listening to voices of the world (e.g. news, social media, etc.) can breed anxiety and fear about what may be. Listening to God’s voice will bring a sense of calm and hopeful expectation. As we learn to be patient, we can find grace while we wait.

We don’t know what will happen next. Sometimes, things have a way of working out. Other times, a situation deteriorates before it gets better. No matter what, God loves you and is present with all of us while we wait.
